Hi Sareena! I'm taking my first AP course in European History and my teacher has us take lecture notes where we have to copy everything down in a highly specific format from the board while he talks about each bullet point. In the rush to write everything down the way he has it on the slide, I miss the important stuff that he's saying and end up with frustratingly vague and unexplained notes. Any tips? xoxo

u could ask him if u can have permission to record the lecture on ur phone or something? that way u can listen back to the audio once u get home and u can fill in any gaps in the information that u may have missed earlier ? @ followers if u have any more advice feel free to reply/reblog!

I used to have a teacher who would talk out all of our notes and she talked extremely fast… needless to say I 100% get your struggle friendo. I like my notes to be really clean and organized, so I used to get SO much anxiety (to the point that I would cry) because I couldn’t write fast enough to keep up with her, and when I would my keep up with her, my notes would be so messy I couldn’t read them, let alone learn from them.

My first suggestion would be to ask your teacher if you can type your notes. Unless you are an EXTRA slow typer, typing will always be quicker than writing! My teacher was extra cruel and thought that having us handwrite our notes would better prep us for college (which literally makes no sense since every student types their notes in college, but I digress.)

If you have to handwrite your notes, write in cursive! I’ve heard lots about how writing in cursive is a lot faster than printing, so that might help you out.

I would also suggest asking your teacher to record their lessons before moving on to my final suggestion, but as stated earlier, my professor was actually the spawn of satan herself and wouldn’t let me do that either…. so here’s what I did:

It’s a heck of a lot more work, but this system allowed for me to take detailed notes while keeping up with the speed in which my professor talked, as well as having my notes be legible. I ended up developing a super detailed abbreviation system for my notes. I had an abbreviation for literally every *important* filler word imaginable. The majority of it was actually “text talk” i.e: 4 instead of for, 2 or an arrow instead of to, u instead of you, etc. I also would drop all vowels. For example, the word “abbreviation” would turn into “abbrvtn.” It might seem difficult to read, but in context it flows better than you would think. I also dropped all unnecessary filler words like “the,” “an,” or “a.”  I wrote all my notes in class in this format. From there, I would go home and type up those notes in a well written format, you could always handwrite them as well, but typing is easier imo. From there, I would throw the old notes out and just keep the well written, typed versions for me to study. It’s definitely a process and takes a little while to get in the swing of writing the abbreviated version of literally every word, but you start to get into the swing of things after a few classes.

This process really saved me in that class, and I know a few friends who tried this out as well and found it helped them out too! I hoped you could find some of these tips at least a little helpful! Best of luck!!
